L'attività di redazione del giornale mira innanzitutto a creare coinvolgimento e partecipazione, a favorire la creatività degli alunni convittori, la socializzazione, l'abitudine al lavoro in équipe.

La denominazione "Il Mosaico", scelta dai convittori fondatori nel 1999, vuole simboleggiare la ricostituzione nell'ambito del Convitto dei numerosi tasselli ricchi di storia, cultura e tradizione, dei vari Comuni di provenienza degli stessi ragazzi.

La pubblicazione, dopo un periodo di interruzione, riprende nel 2004 con l'edizione di Natale. Dal Dicembre 2004 le uscite del periodico sono regolari, con due numeri l'anno: l'edizione natalizia e quella primaverile, nei mesi di Dicembre e Maggio.
